When it is time to look for fencing for your farm, it can feel like a daunting task. I’m sure when you initially searched “farm fencing”, you looked at all of the options and felt overwhelmed. Not to worry! We at Fencing Direct offer a range of fencing options that are all suited for your farm. Each of these options has its unique pros and cons, which we will outline for you.
There is no “best” overall fencing for a farm. The unique aspect of fencing is how many different options there are, which also makes the decision stressful. The key thing to keep in mind is that you know your farm and farmland best, so you know what assets you want to highlight and what you may want to minimize. The advantages and disadvantages for each of these fences are what makes the decision difficult, yet easy in a way if you know what function you want your farm fencing to have. We have first outlined the most common type of fencing, but we have also provided other options that may be best suited for your farm.
Vinyl Post & Rail Fencing
Vinyl post and rail fencing is the most common style of fencing used for farms. Traditionally, post and rail fencing was made of hardy chestnut wood and was very easy to construct. While the latter is still true regarding post and rail fencing, this type of fencing is no longer made of wood due to the high cost of upkeep. Wooden fences require a lot of maintenance, including re-painting, repairs, and weather damage. That is why we use vinyl fencing! Vinyl is more durable and sturdy, and it requires less maintenance than wood fencing.
Even though we construct our post and rail fencing out of vinyl, we can still provide that classic, traditional look for your farm. We coat our post and rail fencing with UV-resistant vinyl coating with a lifetime warranty. We want you to have the benefits of the classic aesthetic of post and rail fencing, without having to sacrifice modern quality. The combination of the classic post and rail fencing look with a touch of modern protection makes a vinyl post and rail fencing perfect for farmland. Imagine driving along your property line and seeing your farmland beautifully enclosed by a classic post and rail fencing!
Vinyl post and rail fencing are excellent choices for farms with large livestock, as they clearly delineate property lines. Whether you’ve got a large or small property, the vinyl post and rail fencing can mark your state law-designated boundary line. When you are constructing a fence, we highly recommend that you consult the original deed of the land in order to ensure that you properly and accurately delineate your property line. Additionally, because of how durable vinyl fencing is, you can rest assured that large livestock will not be able to chew through a fence, which can create potential safety and hazardous conditions. Another advantage of vinyl fencing is its ability to bend and not break. If you are using the fencing to contain large livestock, you want fencing that will bend to pressure but is resistant to breaking.
One of the main disadvantages of vinyl fencing is the initial cost. Because of its high quality and durability, vinyl fencing does have a higher upfront cost, but it also requires less maintenance. Think back to the wood fencing; wood fencing requires lots of maintenance and frequent re-painting. But with vinyl fencing, there is significantly less maintenance required, so vinyl fencing is a better long-term investment.
Other options
There are other options that may be good for you and your farmland, depending on what you intend the function of your fencing to be. While vinyl post and rail fencing is a classic option, you know your farmland best, so you know what will be best suited for your purpose.
Aluminum fencing is the best option for security. Aluminum is strong and light, and it can be easily molded into unique shapes. Once set, aluminum fencing cannot be broken, so it is excellent for security. Aluminum fencing is good for outdoors because it doesn’t rust and is resistant to corrosion. This type of fencing tends to be a cheaper and economic option, and it does not require long-term maintenance. However, aluminum fencing may not provide that aesthetic look of the classic vinyl post and rail fencing.
If you have a lot of ground scavengers, chain link fencing may be the best option for you. Chain link fencing provides ample durability. There is more variety in the type of chain link fencing and it will last for a long time. Chain link fencing goes all the way to the ground from the top, so ground scavengers will have a harder time entering your land from under the fence. Similar to aluminum fencing, the main downside to chain link fencing is the look. Chain link fencing is essentially wire connecting a pole of metal to the ground; so while it provides ample security, it also does not provide the classic aesthetic of the vinyl post and rail fencing.
The last option that is best suited for farmland is vinyl privacy fencing. We have outlined the benefits of vinyl previously, which include no long-term maintenance, weather resistance, and is very aesthetic. The main difference between vinyl post & rail fencing and vinyl privacy fencing is the bottom part of the fence. Vinyl privacy provides privacy to your land because most of the fence is solid, so there are no holes and gaps in the fence. That makes vinyl privacy fencing the best for places of your land that you may want to hide from others.
As you can see, there are a lot of options when it comes to choosing the best type of fencing for your farmland. While the classic option is vinyl post and rail fencing, you can also choose from aluminum fencing, chain link fencing, and vinyl privacy fencing. You will need to think through what you want the function of your fencing to be, and then you can make the best and most informed decision for your farmland.
